This beautiful Vintage Tole painted Tray is in great shape, is an unusual size...12" x 24" and painted with a traditional "Cabbage Rose" motif in rich jewel tones. The word "Tole" comes from the French term meaning lacquered or enamelled. This was usually in reference to Metalware that was decorated by painting and often gilded. At art schools of the time (1700's) taught this "one-stroke" techinque with commercial trades in mind, such as painting on Pottery, Furniture and decorative items. This was an efficient, fast way to decorate items to get them to market. Tole painting is celebrated now as a form of folk art by many and gained popularity in the 18th century in the US with German and Scandinavian immigrants settling in New England. Tole painted objects (such as this tray) are sought by collectors as well as anyone looking to add a touch of whimsy to their cottage or cabin!
